While line-voltage wire feeds high power to the outdoor condenser, 14/4 wire (4-conductor, 14-gauge cable) carries both low-voltage DC communication signals and power between the outdoor unit and indoor air handler.

No, you cannot use 14/3 wire. Standard 14/3 cable contains 3 insulated conductors plus a bare grounding wire. Ductless mini-splits require 4 fully insulated conductors (3 circuit conductors for L1 power, L2/Neutral, and bi-directional DC data communication, plus 1 insulated equipment grounding conductor). Under NEC Article 100, the grounding conductor cannot be used as a circuit return. Using 14/3 leaves you one insulated conductor short.
1. Shielded vs. Non-Shielded 14/4 Wire
Inverter compressors generate high-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI). If your communication wire runs parallel to main service conductors, high-voltage lines, or metal studs:
- Shielded 14/4 (Recommended): Features an aluminum foil wrap and drain wire. Shields DC microprocessor communication from radio frequency interference. Mandatory for Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, and Daikin.
- Non-Shielded 14/4: Permissible on short runs for DIY brands like MrCool and Pioneer, provided the cable does not run alongside high-amperage feeders.
