1. The Standard Rule vs. The HVAC Exception
In general residential branch wiring (lighting and convenience receptacles), NEC 240.4(D) enforces strict limits:
- 14 AWG Copper Wire = 15A Maximum Breaker
- 12 AWG Copper Wire = 20A Maximum Breaker
- 10 AWG Copper Wire = 30A Maximum Breaker
Mini-splits break this rule legally under NEC Article 440. Hermetic refrigerant motor-compressors draw significant locked-rotor inrush current upon startup. If the breaker were sized strictly to the wire's continuous ampacity, the breaker would nuisance-trip during compressor startup. Under NEC 440.22, the breaker is sized up to the Maximum Overcurrent Protection (MOP) to provide ground-fault and short-circuit protection, while internal thermal overload sensors and the Minimum Circuit Ampacity (MCA) protect the conductor wire from overheating.
2. Does a Mini-Split Require a GFCI Breaker?
Under NEC 2020 & NEC 2023 Article 210.8(F), all outdoor HVAC equipment requiring 50A or less (single-phase) legally mandates GFCI protection in jurisdictions that have adopted these code editions.
The Solution: If your local jurisdiction enforces NEC 210.8(F), use an HVAC-specific high-frequency-tolerant GFCI breaker (e.g., Siemens or Square D commercial-grade units) or check if your municipal building department has adopted the temporary amendment delaying enforcement for inverter heat pumps.
3. Can You Splice Mini-Split Wire?
Power Conductors (Panel to Disconnect): Yes, supply power wire can be spliced inside an approved, accessible metal or plastic junction box using UL-listed wire nuts or WAGO lever connectors (NEC 300.15). Splicing inside open wall cavities or conduit bodies without a junction box is illegal.
Communication Cable (14/4 Tray Cable): No, you should never splice communication cable. 4. Does a Mini-Split Need Its Own Dedicated Breaker?
Yes, absolutely. Under NEC 110.3(B), NEC 210.23, and NEC Article 440 (Parts II & III), permanently connected hermetic motor-compressor equipment must be supplied by an individual, dedicated branch circuit. You cannot tap into an existing 240V dryer circuit, electric water heater circuit, or general convenience receptacle circuit.
