1. The 115V vs. 230V Electrical Profile

A 9,000 BTU mini-split is one of the only HVAC sizes widely manufactured in both 115V single-pole and 230V double-pole variants:

  • Standard 115V 9k Units: Require a dedicated 15-Amp single-pole breaker and 14 AWG copper wire. Note: 115V circuits require a dedicated neutral wire (Line 1 + Neutral + Equipment Ground).
  • High-Efficiency 230V 9k Units: Cold-climate hyper-heat units (such as Mitsubishi or Daikin) often operate on 208/230V. Because higher voltage halves operating amperage (~6A to 8A MCA), they require a 15-Amp double-pole breaker and 14/2 cable without a neutral wire.
