Standard 18,000 BTU models (including Gree, Pioneer, and MrCool DIY 4th Gen) specify:

  • MCA (Minimum Circuit Ampacity): 14.5A to 18A → Requires 12 AWG copper wire (sized to NEC Table 310.16 60°C continuous capacity).
  • MOP (Maximum Overcurrent Protection): 20A to 25A → Requires a 20A or 25A double-pole breaker.

Note: Always inspect the outdoor condenser data plate before purchasing circuit breakers and wire.

3. Why 12 AWG Wire with a 25A Breaker Is Code-Compliant

Standard electrical branch circuits (NEC 240.4) restrict 12 AWG wire to a 20A breaker. However, under NEC Article 440.22, air conditioners and heat pumps permit an overcurrent device up to 225% of compressor rated load to absorb startup locked-rotor inrush.

If your 18k unit lists an MCA of 16A and an MOP of 25A, you can safely and legally install 12 AWG wire protected by a 25A breaker.
